Absolutely stunning walk, well worn path which is easier enough to follow. Last third following the wall is steep. Not a trail to do when it's wet. Lots of rock to cover and I imagine it would be quite slippery. Only went to the saddle because it was colder and windier than I was dressed for. Really beautiful trail though, and great views of the valley beyond from the saddle.
Well pathed out and hard to go wrong. Easy enough terrain due to the marked out steps which is great. Plenty of people around for guidance and a great community feel about it all. Well marked out trail. Sun was splitting the skies but thick fog at the top.
Great experience nevertheless. This trail has a bit of everything. Loved following the river in the first part and being amongst the trees, to then opening up in the open valley and the stoney staircase climb to the Saddle. The view looking to Newcastle through the gap was beautiful. The summit section is tough going, quite strenuous even for us who are pretty fit. The top was covered in clouds but it was still so beautiful because it was so quiet, no wind and hardly any people.
My friend and I walk a lot, and are quite fit, it is border line strenuous rather than a medium trail. But well worth the effort. Easy to navigate as it is all stone trail. Tough incline during the final half an hour but totally worth it for the experience.
Spectacular and I would consider this more strenuous than moderate due to the perpetual stone staircase that takes you almost the entire way. My quads and calves were sore for 2 days, totally worth it. Everyone on the trail was incredibly friendly!
FWIW, I am 52, athletic and exercise daily. We went on a sunny, warm day and I definitely recommend putting on plenty of sun cream as I got a bit burnt! I found taking breaks on the way up helped me and it was worth the hike - just be mindful of flies and midges on route especially at the top! Challenging trail - climbing all the time. Terrain was rock stairs most of the way. Last 2 k very steep. Took 2 hours up and nearly 2 hours back.
Views were amazing at every turn. Well worth the climb. Amazing trail, shame we were in the clouds when we reached the top, yet we were able to get a glimpse of the view bellow through the clouds. And an amazing trail all throughout. Gorgeous but challenging path. The route begins quite nice, through forests, past rivers and waterfalls. Also be mindful of midges at the top. I was eaten alive.
Great hike, tough at the last part and difficult getting down too. Took us about 4 and a half hours from start to finish with a good few breaks in between.
Weather was great, imagine it would be treacherous when wet. Stepped trail all the way up, hiking boots important. Parked in Donard Park, free car parking and easy access to the trail. Donard Park to Slieve Donard hard Length 9. The Mourne Wall climbs the western and southern slopes and connects to a tiny stone tower at the top. There are also the ruins of two ancient burial cairns on the peak.
In local tradition, like with many other mountains, it is traditional to bring a stone from the bottom to put on the cairn at the summit. It was subsequently linked to and named for Saint Donard, a disciple of St Patrick who was claimed to have made the peak his hermitage.
People would ascend the mountain as part of an annual pilgrimage until the s, which may have begun as a harvest ceremony. The trails are well-maintained, but proper footwear and equipment are required to prevent problems along the way. Because the terrain is so varied, a few sections may get muddy or treacherous after rain. Because there are no facilities along the journey, it is very vital to bring water and food.
