The summoner Rydia becomes angry and uses her summon magic to create an earthquake in her battle with the two heroes. Rydia soon warms up to Cecil, when they realize the king is trying to conquer the world, and destroyed Mist, thinking it was a threat. The earthquake, however, separated Cecil and Rydia from Kain though it is up to the player whether Kain is hit by the earthquake or not, as he could be in the air thanks to his Jump ability.
Kain, however, has sided with the King. Cecil will in fact fight him, only to be defeated. Cecil and the others vow to rescue her. Though Golbez is not killed, he is severely wounded. It is then discovered that Kain was under the control of Golbez. Kain regains his normal consciousness and frees Rosa. He also reveals that he was somewhat conscious during his captive state, but wanted to keep Rosa near. Kain remains with Cecil for quite awhile, trying to obtain the four Light and four Dark Crystals.
However, before departing for the moon, Kain is re-taken control of by Zemus. Kain then, once again, rejoins Cecil to defeat Zemus. He is also one of the few friends of Cecil not attending Cecil's wedding to Rosa. In the end he is seen at the peak of Mt. Ordeals with his hair blowing in the wind, vowing to become a great dragoon like his father. In the game's reissues and 3D remake , this is expanded on inside the extra dungeon, the Lunar Ruins.
Their plan was eventually found out by Lightning, and eventually, she and the remaining warriors, Laguna Loire, Tifa Lockheart, Vaan, and Yuna agreed to go with their plan to go into the Empyreal Paradox and prevent more Manikins to enter the realm. Kain knew this was a suicide mission, but he has no regrets and joined them to fight the Manikins. Although he was slain and unable to be revived, he succeeded the mission, and in the 13th Circle, the threat of the Manikin in a horde was prevented, enabling the Warriors of Cosmos to claim victory.

Kain aspired to follow the footsteps of his father from an early age, and trained in the art of dragoons. This feat earned him the place as a Commander of the Dragoons, and this is the position FF4 finds him in.
Not long before the start of the game, Cecil has been ordered to recover crystals from neighboring countries, by force if need be, and has just returned from Mysidia, where he has taken the crystal there at swordpoint.
Cecil questions the king's orders, and gets demoted and sent on a side mission to deliver a ring - in some versions unknown, in some the Carnelian Signet - to the village of Mist.
When Kain protests, he is sent together with Cecil. Just before reaching Mist, Cecil and Kain get attacked by the Mist Dragon , which they defeat in order to continue. When they reach Mist, however, the unexpected happens: the Bomb Ring, as per its name, sends out Bombs that decimate the village. In the rubbles of the village, they find a little girl , crying.
The Mist Dragon they destroyed earlier was, in fact, her mother's Eidolon , and her mother died with it. The girl blames Cecil and Kain for it. While the two are arguing about what to do with her - Kain wants to kill her to finish their job, whereas Cecil wants to spare her - she summons Titan, who creates a landslide.
When the dust clears, Kain is trapped on one side of the rubbles, with Cecil and the girl on the other. When he can't find Cecil, Kain returns to Baron, possibly to report what happened to Cecil, and to get help.
